Don Hurless was commissed to write "Fanfare for God" which opened the October 2003 Lima Symphony concert. The symphony was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

About this art exhibit, in Don Hurless's own words:
"One summer morning I was watching the Today Show and saw a lady telling about how she taught art at a San Francisco college. She wrote a book called "Drawing from the right side of the brain."

Since I couldn't draw, at least I'd see what Betty Edwards had to say about the brain. I couldn't figure out how my piano students could be brother and sister with the same parents, but one could memorize her music, but couldn't sight read it, whiler her brother could sight read his music, but could not memorize it. The personality of the brain could be the answer.

When I got the book, I started reading it. Edwards said just don't read the book, do the lessons. She said, "Don't draw what you think, draw what you see." The first lesson, she had me draw a picture that was upside down int he book. She said, don't look at it right side up. Just draw what you see. Follow the lines in the sketch where ever they go, even if you don't know what you're drawing."

When I got done, I turned the sketch over ---- it was a picture of Straninsky, the composer sitting in a chair. His head was small, but his hands on his lap were huge. I thought, I sure messed that up. But, when I turned the picture in the book right side up, my picture was exactly right.

So my next assignment was to blow up a paper sack, set it on the table, and draw it.

DRAW WHAT I SEE. That's the sack in the cardboard frame. So enjoy MY new found JOY.

I can draw. "DRAWMATIC, isn't it!""

Art Exhibit will run throughout February. Free and open to the public. At The Meeting Place on Market.
